Parables have fascinated me as a Christian since I was a boy. I have always wondered why Jesus used a lot of parables in his teachings. He mentioned the day to day situations to convey his messages to the common people. He used simple language so that the people will be able to understand his teachings. We are already aware of the parables that Jesus has given to us and maybe by this time have mastered them, however, the question is, have we applied them whenever we come up in a situation similar to it. Have we lost the significance of these parables in our lives?
Though Jesus used the simplest language and situations of daily life, probably most of the people at that certain time did not understand the implications of the parables. Even His disciples asked this question “Why do you speak to people in parables?” Matthew 13:10. Jesus answers in verse 13, “That’s why I speak to them in parables, because ‘they look but don’t see, and they listen but don’t hear or understand.’” A parable is an illustration with implications in it where we are able to see the big picture. It is a story in which we will be able to put ourselves in the shoes of the characters. We can relate to it so closely as if it was talking about ourselves, still we “look but don’t see, we listen but don’t hear or understand”.
Here in this section of articles, we will look closer to different parables we encounter in our daily lives, our purpose in this section is to claim the promise that Jesus reveals in verse 16 of the same chapter mentioned above, “How blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear!” We will be blessed because we will find guidance, comfort and hope through these parables to tackle the hardships of our spiritual life; through these illustrations, the Holy Spirit will be able to mold us in the shape that God wants us to be; through these stories we will be a better person to our community and family. All Jesus asks us today is to “Listen” and be “Blessed”.
In the coming weeks ahead will dive into different parables through which we can relate our lives with. I hope that the iDREAM Leader’s Blog would be a benefiting factor to your leadership or ministry.
Blessings,
Charles R.
