Demands Faith
1 John 5:4 says, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith.”(NKJV)
So then what is this faith that is being demanded of us? Some people would equate it with trust, devotion, belief, conviction. One dictionary defines it this way: faith is “unquestioning confidence.” The bible also gives its own definition in Hebrews 11:1. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” How do you define faith?
People lack victory coz they don’t exercise their faith enough. They depend too much on feelings, emotions, and their works. What does the bible have to say about that? Reading from Ephesians 2:9 “Not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
We need to plant our seed of faith. Let it grow and it will bring fruit, giving victory through Jesus. We need to be water walkers. I ask a question now and again to the young people where ever I go. What made Peter so different from the other disciples in the boat the night that he walked on water? Why is it that he and not them, was able to walk on water? Many different answers pop out which may all be true, “he loved Jesus more” one person says, “he was a close friend to Jesus” replies another, or “he simply had more faith than the other disciples” comes another response. Yes, while these answers may be true I always like to think that the main difference was that Peter stepped out of the boat. He left his comfort zone. Many of us Christians today lack victory because we do not step out of our comfort zones. We sit back in our pews, on our sofas, relax at our desks and work stations hoping for the unexpected just to happen. We don’t plant our seeds of faith. We do not exercise our faith. I could mention many stories of people who left their comfort zones, in faith, knowing that the Lord would carry them through. One is of my family. How my dad left Malawi for the United States to further his education. With not much money in hand he set out. After a while he sent for us to join him. I remember picking blueberries and working on different farm lands just to raise the money needed for basic survival. I remember how he and mom would work odd hours just to make it by. Many of you go through that as well. But it’s what happened on a particular day that still grips me to this day. It was nearing enrolment my dad says and he was sitting at home trying to think how he will get money for tuition. While sitting and praying, the telephone rang. Dad answers and the voice on the other end asks for a certain person. Wrong number. So he gets back to his meditation and after a while, the phone rings again. Same lady, same response given…wrong number. My dad thought nothing of it. Till the phone rang yet again and this time, with the same lady on the other end, the conversation went on a bit longer. After confirming that she had been dialing the correct number, she went on to ask my dad if he was in any need. She said maybe the Lord allowed this to happen. Well, to make the long story short, a few days later dad was called and told that money had been sent for his tuition.
At times we need to step out of our comfort zones. To take that first step out and while keeping our eyes on Jesus, walk on water.
Jesus gives us victory because He Demands Faith.
How else could we gain victory? Stay tuned
