WILL YOU BEGIN THE JOURNEY?

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a man who had it all. He had all things in the world that an individual would always be wishing to have. He had a family who loved him and whom he loved. He had values that helped him see right from wrong and make good choices. And this man is no other than (pause) Teddy.

Teddy: Hi I’m Teddy. I am a freshman student in my university. Because of my charm, I didn’t have a hard time getting new friends. But, despite having it all I never felt complete and so I searched for that missing piece in my life. So here’s my story. One day…..

Lady1: Hey there. So I guess you’re the new student in campus, huh. Teddy, isn’t it?

Teddy: Well, yes I am.

Lady2: I will be frank. Well you see, we are the coolest volleyball varsity team in the university and I don’t see any reasons why you can’t be one of us. Besides, we can, in a snap, make you popular.

Teddy: (He looked at his friends). Common guys, why don’t we join them?

Lady3: But wait. If you’re going to join us, you may have to give some friendships up. Probably you know the difference between popular and unpopular.

Narrator: Teddy thought this was a tough price to pay but he reasoned, “I could use some new relationships.” And so Teddy stopped seeing his friends and soon was spending all his time with the “key people”. It came to the point that even on Saturdays; he would spend time with his team and have fun. He focused more on his team and his grades began to fail.

After practice…

Guy: You’re Teddy, a.k.a. Mr. Popular. Well, I heard that this popular guy here is having a hard time in his studies. (Everyone laughs.)

Lady1: Come join us and we’ll assure you that you’re grades will go high again.

Lady2: But if you’re going to come with us, you may have to give some family time up.

Lady3: Come in early, go home late, half days on Sundays, won’t have much time left for family fun days.

Narrator: At first Teddy thought they were wrong. He believed he could do it all. But the work kept piling up, and so without even realizing what he was doing, he eventually set aside his family. Barely had he known that the group he joined would teach him to cheat and copy assignments just to get a high grade. And so Teddy had his grades back and was well known for his great accomplishments.  But still, he was not happy. Soon his friends had left him.

Guy1: What do we have here? It looks like someone is in low spirits.

Guy2: Don’t you want to forget the things that are bothering you?

Teddy: Of course I wanted to.

Guy3: I have a great idea, why don’t you go with us in this place where you will forget all of your problems?

Guys 1, 2, 3: I’m sure you’ll have fun.

Teddy: Well it sounds great. I could use some of my time and have fun.

Guy1: But wait, we have one rule here. All you have to do is follow us. No matter what we’ll do, you’ll do.

Narrator: Teddy wanted to belong to this group and so he followed what his friends told him. He’s gone to bars, drank, and smoked. Worldly things ruled his life. Soon, his friends had also left him. But Teddy, still, did not find happiness.

Months have passed… and Teddy…

Teddy: I had nowhere else to go. I’d given up my friends, my family and my morals, just to find the sense of belonging from others. I was no longer the man who had it all. As I looked at what remained, I saw that all I had left were the dreadful memories that my bad acquaintances had given me. No friends to correct my life, no values to channel it, no family to encourage me to go through it. My life was horrible. Not until I joined… (Youth Group name) I found my happiness in Christ…

(Music…) How about you? Will you choose to begin the journey… with my (Youth Group name) family.
